As part of the ongoing development of the “The Beast” Urban Park, the city of El Paso, Texas commissioned artist Mark Grieve to build a large ornamental archway for the parks main entrance. The artist won the commission based on a small paper and wire concept model, and lacked any formal training in design or documentation. I was brought on to design, draw, and model the piece such that it could be engineered and built. Based on the original model, several hand sketches, and conversations with the artist I developed a new design as well as renderings that could be approved by the city. Additionally, I developed all drawings used by the structural engineer, all cut sheets for the steel fabricators, and all construction drawings for each of the 78 “fronds.” The piece was completed in September of 2020.
