NORFOLK BOTANICAL GARDEN
Winning Proposal - Norfolk Botanical Garden
Growing up in Northern California, my childhood home had a rusted 1960’s International pickup truck with a tree growing through the cab in the field out back. Over time the tree grew, the hood rusted, bushes sprouted in the bed, a goat even broke the side window, but the character of the truck only grew. For much of the last century this image of the old truck in a field has inspired generations of cultural references and imagery and has become ingrained in the American psyche as a piece of classic, agrarian Americana. When Mark Grieve Arts was approached to submit a proposal for an archway for the Norfolk Botanical Garden, we drew heavily on this image to inspire the piece. Working closely with the artist I designed a proposal that elevated this image and transformed it from a garnish on the American landscape to a centerpiece of an institution that celebrates American growth. After winning the project, my twin brother Miles developed the design to its final form, and is overseeing the documentation and construction. The piece is scheduled to be completed in 2024.
